Microfluidic liquid drainage with ion concentration polarization

Abstract
We introduce a liquid drainage microfluidic device with ion-selective Nafion coated channel remaining target molecules in large volume reservoir. In previous approaches of electrokinetic pre-concentration in microfluidic channels, highly concentrated sample plugs could easily be acquired, but collection of the plug could not be available in several tens of microliter scale, which required in conventional analysis like ELISA. We developed a new concept of liquid drainage, avoiding charged molecules from drained together by ion concentration polarization (ICP) with the Nafion coated channel. As a result, clinically relevant sample of influenza hemagglutinin was successfully concentrated and gained the enhanced detection sensitivity by conventional equipment.
